Rough Beginnings

It's Poetry Friday! This poem was written in high school, which is when I did a lot of poetry writing, but this poem was written about a friends family life. She confided in me about her home life, and those stories produced this poem. Tell me what you think!

It's so empty in here she feels so alone
She doesn't feel safe, not even in her own home
Her mother is a monster, her father is a lie
Once when she was little she just hoped they would die
Sitting in her room she likes to wish upon a star
That one day God will take her somewhere far
She's tired of loving and just getting hurt
There was a time when she tried to bury herself in the dirt
She's a messed up kid who's had a rough past
She was even blamed for a marriage that ended so fast
And with each passing day she feels as if it's her last
Beneath that smile there's a little girl crying
Because inside her, she feels as if she is dying
She's been raped, she's been bullied, she's even been shot at
When she looks in the mirror she sees a girl that's too fat
People tried to help her, they wanted her to be okay
They said, "have some faith, it will get better one day"
But how can she believe that when each day felt the same?
When looking through her life, she felt she was the only one to blame
"Let your past make you better, not bitter."
