During your lifetime, you have probably heard either the question that could also be given as a statement, "Are you going to college?" Some parents asked their children because they understood that not every person is supposed to attend college. However, there are the parents who tell their children that they will be going to college. because they want them to have the best and brightest future possible. College is one of the few paths that a person can embark upon once they finally have that lovely high school diploma in their hands signifying the end of an era. High school was a breeze for many people, but would college be the same? Is college the path that you should choose when graduating from high school?
If you answered yes, then good for you. I hope you chose the right school because they are all very different. Have some fun while you are there since you will most likely be living there for at least the first two years of it. Go out and make some friends, they will help keep you sane during those long nights of studying for three different tests. Make sure you are keeping up with the school work. College isn't like high school. Your parents aren't there to hold your hand and make sure that you are studying. Your classes are going to be much harder so if you are struggling or behind then you need to make sure you make the time to visit some peer tutors. You will have to change many of your habits to fit your new life. Also, don't worry about not having a major selected just yet. Usually the first two years are dedicated to to the general education courses that everyone has to take, but at least be mindful that you are thinking about what you may want to spend the rest of your life doing. You've got four more years of working hard in school before you enter into the real world and begin your life.
If you answered no, then there's no shame to that. Not everyone goes on to college because college isn't for everyone. Some people have had their fill of school by the time they graduate high school. Some people also barely made it through high school so they don’t see the point of wasting money on college. College is very stressful. The classes are much harder, a lot of money goes into it which means lots and lots of debt afterward, and many don’t view college as a necessity. Not all jobs require a college degree so entering into the workforce right after college isn’t a bad thing. You get to go straight into making some money for yourself. No one should be forced to go to college because if they happen to flunk out then that’s thousands of dollars down the drain. You may even discover that you are one of those people that needs a break after high school. College doesn’t have to be something you jump right into because it’s not going anywhere. If one day you decide that you suddenly want to try college, it’s open to you.
Bottom line is that there is no right or wrong choice when choosing a path to go down after high school. Go to college or don’t go to college, the choice is yours to make. You will have to live with the decision anyway so you might as well make it one you won’t regret.
